The story
Medovníky, spiced honey cookies often decorated with white or colored icing in intricate patterns, belong to the Slovak folk-art tradition of painted gingerbread, which in some towns, such as Bratislava, Trnava, and Levoča, attained the status of a recognized craft with its own masters and workshops, much like Croatia's licitar tradition from the Zagorje region. The dough is flavored with honey, cinnamon, and cloves, and it rests overnight so the spices can mature before it is pressed into molds or cut freehand into stars, hearts, and figures. Decorating with icing, in fine lines and tiny details, takes patience and a skill passed down through the generations, and in some families it becomes a shared winter activity for the whole extended family. For Slovak families in the diaspora, medovníky are one of the most visually striking and most easily recognized symbols of a Slovak Christmas.
