The story
Honey spice cookies in the licitar style reflect one of Croatia's most recognizable craft traditions: the licitar heart, a hard honey cake shaped into a heart and decorated with sugar icing in vivid colors, a craft of northern Croatia that was inscribed in 2010 on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Traditionally, licitar hearts were not eaten — they were too hard for that — but served as an ornament, a gift, or a souvenir from folk fairs and holiday stalls, often with a small mirror or a message set into the center. For the softer, edible version of medenjaci meant for the table, a gentler dough with honey, cinnamon, and cloves is used, decorated in a similar way but made to be eaten, not displayed. This dual role — one heart for looking at, another for eating — is a unique feature of the Croatian honey-cake tradition. For the diaspora, a licitar heart as an ornament on the Christmas table or tree is one of the most recognizable visual symbols of a Croatian Christmas, even when no one eats it.
