The story

Cukroví is the collective name for the dozens of kinds of small Christmas cookies that Czech households bake weeks ahead, often starting as early as mid-November — many families keep a list of ten, fifteen, or even twenty varieties that must be made before Christmas, each with its own shape, filling, or icing. This habit of baking ahead and storing everything in tins grew out of practical necessity: it is impossible to bake it all in the final week, so the work is spread across the whole of December, and the finished cookies are kept in cool pantries or out on balconies. Trading boxes of cukroví among neighbors and friends is a common social ritual, almost an informal contest over who has the best recipe for which kind. For Czech families in the diaspora, cukroví is one of the clearest measures of how much time and effort stands behind a seemingly modest plate of cookies — a holiday that, in culinary terms, is prepared over months, not days.
